Quelques exemples :
    • nom d’action : libérer -> libérateur
    • nom d’action : tomber -> chute
    • causatif : savoir -> apprendre (= faire savoir)
    • inchoatif : dormir -> s’endormir (= commencer à)

    • intensif : manger -> dévorer (= manger avec frénésie)
    • terminatif : boxer -> raccrocher les gants (= arrêter de boxer)>/li>
  • Les mots-entrées de la catégorie ETAT sont des adjectifs. Exemples :
    • nom d’état : grand -> grandeur - grand -> agrandir (= faire / rendre grand)
    • patronyme : jeune -> Lejeune (= nom propre de personne)
    • devenir : vieux -> vieillir (= devenir vieux)
    • diminutif : jeune -> jeunet (= petit jeune)
    • intensif : laid -> hideux (= très laid)

    • Apotheke (all.) = pharmacie
    • bodega (esp.) = cave

Introduction

Who would think that the words « cape, captain, chaplet, chapter, capital, cattle » have the same origin ? Did you know that the name of the aristoloche is the whole kit and caboodle ? This plant was supposed to ease chidbirth ! Indeed its name comes from the Greek « aristos = best » and from « lokhos = chidbirth « . This work is not an encyclopedic dictionary . It is not a synonymous nor homonymous nor antonymous dictonary either .This is an etymological dictionary .

Its aim is to be original in two ways .

First its ambition is to go back up as much as possible in diachrony into the origin of words : unto the Indo-European root or theme, unto the Semitic root or unto the root of whatever other linguistic family . Its second ambition is to be a compared etymological dictionary, thus synchronic, transversal : It will be possible to match the desired French or English word to other « brother-words », in the main Romanic languages ( Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Rumanian, Catalan, language of southern France, ) not forgetting English, ( half Romanic ) and German . Lastly, each word will be associated to a radical of the same origin .

In same way that each individual has a father, a grandfather and a great-grandfather, different words and radicals have a genealogy, that is to say an etymology .

Each word or radical's father is called «etymon », the grandfather is the « hyperetymon » . The aim is to go back up as high as possible from a French or English word or radical or from another language . e.g. The etymon of the word « boutique » is the Latin word « apotheca », which comes from the Greek word « apothêkê », which is the hyperetymon of our « boutique » .

This word belongs to a family : the Indo-European family : an even more ancient language constructed by linguists . This Greek word comes from an Indo-European word « apo-DHÊ-kâ », which would be the great-grandfather . Many of these words are constructed from a root . Here, the Indo-European root is « DHÊ < DHEH1

In the following languages ( French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, Provençal, Rumanian ) we can look for the equivalent, the « brother-word » of « boutique » . e.g. Apotheke ( German ) = the chemist's bodega ( Spanish ) = cellar

To this we can add the notion of hypoetymon, that is to say the intermediary state of a language : that is the case for Old French, Anglo-Norman, Old High German, etc .In a way, the hypoetymon of a word will be the childhood of the word . e.g. « boticle » ( Old French ) is the hypoetymon of « boutique » .

We call radical a part of a word which has no own existence in a sentence, but which holds the meaning of the word or part of its meaning . Sometimes the word or the radical comes directly from the Greek without being touched by Latin . Thus it does not have an etymon . e.g. The radical « nephro » ( = « kidney » ) comes from the Greek word « nephros ».The radical « nephro » has the same role as a word .

Sometimes the word or the radical comes from another linguistic family than the Indo-European . It can be the Semitic family ( Arabic, Hebrew etc .) e.g. « tariff » comes from the Arabic « ta&arif »

It can be any other linguistic family ( Sino-Tibetan, Uralo-Altaic, Malayo-Polynesian, Bantu etc .) e.g. « kimono », « avocado », « igloo » etc .

This work, started a few years ago, is far from beeing finished : 17 000 French words, 8 000 English words, 6 000 Spanish words, 4 000 Portuguese words, as many in Catalan, too few still in other languages . However I am considering putting it quite rapidly on line, could the language fanatic internaute who will use this site be kind enough to be indulgent understanding .
